Cancellation of SCLA 2007 Conference
May 10, 2007
To all SCLA supporters past and present, I have the most unpleasant task of announcing the cancellation of our 2007 conference. We are not dissolving, but rather taking a step that will preserve the cash assets of the organization so that we may rebound in the future.SCLA historically has had enough of a reserve to “front” conference planning and booking costs essentially recouping those costs with conference registrations and often adding a bit to the reserves.
For what is probably a myriad of reasons, over the last few conferences we have had decreasing revenues and with the 2007 level of booked and expected registrations, we would experience a shortfall that would send us below a level that would allow us to continue conferences in the future.
We are not part of a state organization, have never received any grants and have always self sustained, so we cannot risk “going all in” so to speak on the hope that we would reach a sufficient level of registrations in the last thirty days.
By giving official notice to Mount Sequoyah today, May 9th we absolved ourselves of any financial responsibility with respect to our conference commitments and we can use this as an opportunity to remain status quo financially, and reflect and evaluate where we should go from here in terms of changes, new approaches etc...that will enhance SCLA’s future.
We will be returning all registration fees ASAP. Additionally, for the few that had made airline reservations, we will reimburse you the airline’s fee for changing your ticket so that you may use it for future travel.
We thank all of you for the support you’ve given us in the past and look forward to being reunited again in 2009 at that very special place, Mount Sequoyah.
